REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST OF MUZAFFARNAGAR

by Suresh Nautiyal

This poem was written long back when the infamous muzzaffarnangar
incident took place in which scores of women activists were gang-raped and men butchered in cold blood. This piece is a salutation to the women activists in particular and women of uttarakhand in general.

REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST OF MUZAFFARNAGAR

At the fag end of the night
Cried she
Emotions hidden
In the deepest of her trampled heart

The Moon sank while the Sun distanced
Itself from her torments

Groaned she
As the dawn of non-violence was about to break
Could she not recollect what happened to her
During the course of night?
Did she want to remember those
Dark shadows
The trampling of the PAC boots
In the dark of October first night
The helpless cries of fellow sisters
From the sugarcane fields
And, painful cries of her innocent brethren
Butchered for nothing
She thought was this the face of
The system that worked
In the name of democracy
Which she was told
To be the best in the world

She thought nothing could hurt her
As Delhi was very near
From Muzzaffar Nagar
She thought some brother of her
Would come from there
And rescue her
From the PAC wrongdoers

Nobody came
Nobody hear her
As everybody was busy
Preparing for the say of salvation

Nobody thought what happened
To her
To her soul

Perhaps, everybody thought
Nobody was unsafe in a system
Called democracy

But, why did not anybody think
It was the democracy
Of Mulayam and Mayavati
And that great soul in Delhi
In perpetual silence!
